Losing Miiverse messes with these Wii U, 3DS games
Good night, sweet prince
Miiverse is on its way out this November, to our extreme disappointment. The community forum was one of the best ways for Wii U and 3DS owners to hang out, share their impressive artwork and provide us with some of the last console generation’s best laughs. It had another purpose, too: It enhanced several of the biggest titles on both consoles.
Now that Miiverse is kicking the bucket, we’re going to miss out on some of the most novel features on these consoles. Follow along to see how the loss of Miiverse impacts titles from Mario Kart 8 to Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Mario Kart 8
No more tournaments in Mario Kart 8 on Wii U once Miiverse goes. Players also won’t be able to share their gameplay videos to YouTube, because that feature was connected to Miiverse. (Yeah, really.) At least we’ll always have angry Luigi ... and Mario Kart 8 Deluxeis out on Switch now, anyway.
Splatoon
This is the most heartbreaking change. Splatoon used Miiverse to populate Inkopolis with players’ fantastic drawings, which were always rad to see. The feature was so popular in the original Splatoon that Nintendo created a unique Miiverse-style feature for Splatoon 2, since the Switch doesn’t have a similar platform of its own. (Sigh.)
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3D World had a more subtle Miiverse effect: Posts would appear on the course select
screen. It’s not the biggest loss, but it’s a cute feature that will go by the wayside.
Super Mario Maker
One of our favorite Wii U games of 2015 loses a small part of its biggest feature. Players won’t be able to comment on shared levels anymore, which is a bummer if you want to diss your rival’s creation. The Nintendo 3DS version of Super Mario Maker notably lacked Miiverse functionality (and level-sharing), so that port is unaffected.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
We dug the Miiverse stage in these games, which showed actual users’ posts in the background of the fight. Not only will that not happen anymore, but Miiverse was also used for posting and sharing video replays — so no more of that, either. You’ll have to figure out a different capture solution if you want to send Smash 4 highlights to YouTube.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade Chronicles X’s BLADE report feature is gone. If you’re still playing this extremely long RPG, take note.
Other games will also be affected in much less obvious ways. Nintendo has a long list of them on its customer support website.
It’s a total bummer that the Miiverse is going by the wayside. Fortunately, we’ve got the Nintendo Switch. But the Switch has yet to satisfy our need for a silly community platform, and so it seems that one of our favorite eras of Nintendo weirdness will soon be over for good.
