Amazon 'Prime Day' is back. After breaking sales records in 2016 it will be 25% longer in 2017 for a day-breaking 30 hours. Now in its third year Amazon has already created a predictable pattern for its retail bonanza regarding what it will reduce and by how much.
So here is your guide to get you ahead of the deals before they are even announced.
When Is Amazon Prime Day 2017?
The deals start at 9pm EST on Monday, July 10th and will end at 3am EST on Wednesday, July 12th.
To take advantage of Prime Day, you must be an Amazon Prime member but you can get a free 30-day trial membership which gives you access to all the deals
You will also still have the option to cancel the membership after 30 days even if you have taken part in Amazon Prime Day.
What Format Are Amazon Prime Deals?
Typically Amazon uses its ‘Lightning Deals’ format for most of the sales which means new deals are released as often as every five minutes. But be quick, the duration of a deal can also be very short and stock for the best deals runs out quickly.
Amazon Prime Day 2017 deals are expected to rival, if not better those found on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. They are also very consistent so, while Amazon doesn’t give away its deals early, here is a look at some of the deals and price reductions you can expect based on historical Amazon data.
Star Buys
Historically Amazon always makes its own products the highlight of Prime Day. Expect that trend to continue with the following predictions for Star Buys once the Prime Day gets underway:
Amazon Echo for $129.99 (save $50) was $40 off on Black Friday and $50 off last Prime Day. Also, recently on sale for $50 off
Amazon Echo Dot (2nd Generation) for $39.99 (save $10) was also $10 off on Black Friday and Cyber Monday
55-inch Samsung HDTVs star buys for last year's Prime Day and Black Friday. Expect another Samsung TV steal this year. (Amazon has announced model numbers in the past, and they have been excellent) (Link is below in blue.
All-New Fire 7 Tablet for $33.33 (save $16.66) new version. Previous version was $33.33 last year on Prime Day and Black Friday, so this should be an upgrade for the same low price
All-New Fire HD 8 Tablet for $49.99 (save $30) new version. Previous version was $59.99 last year on Black Friday
Kindle Voyage for $149.99 (save $50) Was $169.99 on Black Friday and $149.99 on Prime Day last year
Solid Deals
Here are some deal predictions for offers Amazon typically makes. They aren’t quite Star Buys, but still come recommended:
Amazon Echo Show for $199.99 (save $30) new for 2017 and there has been no single purchase discount yet. There may be none given its age, but watch this space
Kindle 6" E-reader for $49.99 (save $30) Same price as Prime Day and Black Friday. It appears as though $49.99 may be the floor for the Kindle on Prime Day and Black Friday. Still a solid purchase
Kindle Paperwhite for $89.99 (save $30) Was $89.99 on Prime Day last year and $99.99 on Black Friday. Expect a similarly repeated price
Kindle Oasis E-reader for $269.99 (save $20) New. I don’t foresee discounts greater than this given its age, but again watch this space
Premium brand 60” 4K Ultra HD Smart TV for $549 - $599 On Black Friday last year, Amazon offered a premium 60" 4K Ultra HD TV for $599. Another retailer offered one for $548. Amazon is likely to repeat this trick and usually offers a premium brand
Treat with Caution
The danger with some Amazon deals is their ambiguity. It doesn’t always explain much about the product or even supply the model number being discounted. This will happen again. So do your research and be cautious around deals like this:
32-inch 720p LED TV for $60 - $90 offered this deal last Prime Day for $99.99 and on Black Friday for $69.99. Great price but the brand and specs will be kept quiet until it launches.
40-inch 1080p LED TV for $115 - $140 offered last Prime Day for $139.99. On Black Friday the cheapest 40-inch TV price was $125. Warning as above
Amazon Voice Deals beyond the $10 promo code these offers are often odd and underwhelming
Amazon Prime Day Final Tips
If you want to guarantee yourself shopping success on Prime Day, here are some top tips:
Install Amazon's Free App - Deals can be browsed 24 hours in advance on the app. You can "watch" a specific sale and the app will send you an alert when it goes live
Be Ready Early - Last year, some deals went live in advance of Prime Day. Expect the same to occur for 2017, particularly with Amazon's own products on July 8th or 9th
Be Most Alert on Tuesday Morning and Afternoon - Expect many of the best deals to go live on Tuesday, July 11th in the morning and afternoon EST. Watch closely around Noon EST when the entire country is awake and at work
Avoid Gimmicky Sales - Be sure to only consider items you actually need or desire. Amazon is notorious for impulse buys so make a point to avoid the rolls of toilet paper and giant gummy bears that prompted the #primedayfail hashtag
Consider Competitor Deals - With Amazon's growth over the last two Prime Days, expect competitor deals from the likes of Walmart, Best Buy and eBay to be better than ever. I will be covering those in a separate article.
